Jailhouse Cottage

Stay in a unique two-bedroom self-contained cottage offering spectacular open views of the Rock and Pillar Ranges, bathed in all-day sunshine.

The cottage boasts an historic 2 cell jail (lockup) circa 1863 -1947 located at the side of the property which has recently been lovingly restored by the current owners Mark and Chris Ford.

The cottage is conveniently located on SH87, opposite the Show Grounds, alongside the Kissing Gate Café and five minutes walk from the Otago Rail Trail.

Relax.
Enjoy the View.

Relax in the garden and watch the big skies and beautiful sunsets and the famous StrathTaieri Pet clouds when windy.  The cottage offers warm, comfortable accommodation and is able sleep up to 4 guests.  The cottage was originally built from former army huts so is quirky and unusual.

A Lockup Story.

A Lockup differs from a gaol (jail) in that it was mostly used as a short-term holding cell for felons who had committed minor crimes such as petty theft, vandalism or being drunk and disorderly. They were generally convicted, fined, and discharged the next day.

People charged with more serious crimes would be taken to Dunedin for trial and sentencing.
